Review: Liverpool ease to victory over Sheffield United as they lift the trophy in style

Liverpool lifted the FA Women’s Championship trophy in style with a 6-1 victory over Sheffield United at Prenton Park on Sunday.

The Reds’ return to the Barclays FA Women’s Super League was already confirmed no matter what the result was against The Blades but that didn’t matter for a Liverpool team who always want to win football matches.

It took Liverpool just three minutes to take the lead, a great pass from Melissa Lawley fell into Katie Stengel’s path and she chipped the ball over the head of ex-Liverpool keeper Fran Kitching and into the net.

The home side doubled their lead in the 15th minute. Lawley doubled her assist tally as she played in Leanne Kiernan who found the back of the net from close range.

After an impressive first half performance, in-form Liverpool forward Lawley added to her two assists with a goal of her own early in the second period before Stengel doubled her own personal goal tally with a volley as The Reds established a four-goal advantage.

Despite Liverpool’s dominance, Sheffield United got a goal back when Ellie Wilson directed the ball home from a Maddy Cusack free-kick before late goals from Missy Bo Kearns and Jas Matthews sparked the title celebrations amongst a Liverpool Women record crowd of 2,138 at Prenton Park.
