‘One game at a time’ Liverpool taking cautious approach at the top says Laws

Liverpool goalkeeper Rachael Laws says that the club are enjoying their stint at the top of the FA Women’s Championship table but they are taking their push for promotion one game at a time.

A return to the Barclays FA Women’s Super League looks to be on the horizon for The Reds who are 10 points clear at the league summit after recording seven straight wins.

Reflecting of her side’s position following their latest win against Sunderland, Liverpool goalkeeper Laws said “We are taking it one game at a time, we are taking it step-by-step. At the moment, we are in a good place at the top and it is comfortable enough that we can enjoy our football and we can relax.

“The pressure is on but it is also off a bit. We are playing well and unless there is a dramatic change in form, we should get across the line – if we don’t then we haven’t deserved to.

“Game-by-game, we are ticking them off and hopefully, after the international break, the games come thick and fast and we continue to pick up points.”

Liverpool are thriving under the guidance of returning boss Matt Beard and Laws went on to highlight the team’s formation as a contributor to their success.

She said “We went to a five at the start of the season, we tried a couple of things in pre-season and a five just suited us better, even going forward not just defensively we look sound.

“Going forward Razza (Roberts) and Taylor (Hinds) offer width and I think Taylor has scored a lot more than expected this season and Razza has probably assisted a lot more being a wing-back.”

Laws broke a club record for the most league clean sheets in a season against Sunderland with the keeper now being on her 10th shut-out. She is yet to concede in the FA Women’s Championship in this calendar year.

Commenting on the achievement, she said “To break the club record is amazing. I am happy to play my part but the fact that I have little to do is a credit to the girls in front.

“I’m happy to keep five clean sheets (in-a-row) but at the end of the day, the win is the important thing. I think it is nice to keep a record but better to get a win.”

Liverpool are back in action after the international break when they face Arsenal in the Vitality Women’s FA Cup fifth round at Prenton Park on Sunday 27 February.
