Manchester City striker White labels title race as 'Best ever' after breaking FAWSL goal record

White became the competition’s all-time top scorer with 55 goals after finding the net in City’s 2-1 win over Arsenal on Sunday, breaking Vivianne Miedema’s record.

The victory moved City up to third in the table and with Chelsea and Manchester United both dropping points, it means that the race for the title is wide open.

“This is potentially the best ever title race,” said White. “It is bigger, better, more competitive, with so many different players from different nations so it’s exciting for the fans.”

When asked about breaking the record of Arsenal’s Dutch international striker Miedema, White played down the feat.

“I was made aware, and obviously it is nice,” she said.

“But for me, I just want to concentrate on what I can do within the team. Obviously, I want to score goals but in any way I can help the team.”

City’s win moves them to within two points of Chelsea and Manchester United, who suffered shock defeats to Brighton & Hove Albion and Reading on Sunday.

White struck The Cityzens’ opener before Lauren Hemp’s goal sealed the victory against an injury-hit Arsenal side. The 31-year-old spoke afterwards about building relationships with the likes of teammates Chloe Kelly and Hemp and how it was helping them on the pitch.

“I am really happy,” said White. “We have been working really hard with Kelly and Hemp to try and get that relationship of
them crossing it and finishing in the box.

“I am pleased everyone is seeing how good Chloe is. Her crosses are unbelievable.”

Despite collecting a vital three points, White says there was a downside – the goal City conceded.

“We were disappointed to have conceded,” she added. “We held on which shows our character in the way we came back as we really wanted the three points.”

The next challenge for City is the huge Manchester derby fixture on Friday. It is a key game in the title race, with both teams wanting maximum points. Not surprisingly, White says that City are already focusing on the game.

“We love playing at home but it is always a tough game a derby game,” she added. “We want to keep the momentum going and get confidence.

“Hopefully, it will be a great game.”

Manchester City’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture against Manchester United is scheduled to take place at The Academy Stadium at 7pm on Friday evening and will be broadcast live on BT Sport 2.
